What is an atoll? An atoll is an amazingly great place to culture Tahitian black pearls! At least, that is the case with the island atoll of Ahe, in French Polynesia.
An atoll is characterized by an island which was once formed by a central volcano. Over time, the volcano has sunk back into the ocean. The result is a land mass in the shape of a ring. The island atoll of Ahe has the crashing Pacific ocean on one side and inside the atoll is what is called a lagoon. At the bottom of the lagoon the volcanic activity continues to fill the water with rich minerals, prime for culturing pearls.
