“They shrink wrapped my pearls.” Patty exclaimed. As you might imagine, I was confused! “They did what?” I asked. “Shrink-wrapped!”
Patty had a nice single-strand pearl bracelet that had been a gift from her mother but Patty has the teeniest tiniest wrist and she needed the bracelet shortened. So, she decided to take her bracelet to the fanciest jewelry store in Augusta, GA. Now, I grew up outside of Augusta and I know exactly where Patty took her bracelet. I would have to say if I was not in the pearl business and I was looking for a fancy jewelry store to trust with my precious pearls, I would take the pearls to this jewelry store. But, a fancy jewelry store clearly does not equate to a high quality pearl knotting business.
So, Patty took her bracelet took this fancy jewelry store and asked them to shorten the bracelet to a specific length. She was assuming, of course, that they would take the bracelet apart, take out some pearls, re-knot the bracelet and hand her back the shortened bracelet and the excess pearls. It makes sense to me, that is what we do with with our jewelry restringing service. But, according to Patty, that is not what this jewelry store did with her pearl bracelet. Instead they shrink-wrapped her pearls.
Are you confused yet? I know I was. What the heck is a shrink-wrapped pearl bracelet? Basically, this jewelry store kept all of Patty’s pearls on her bracelet but they knotted them as tight as possible so it felt tighter. Now, I love tightly knotted pearls but, according to Patty, these pearls were tied so ridiculously tight that the bracelet is impossible to wear, has no flow and the pearls are so tight against the clasp that it is impossible to access the latch to take the bracelet on and off. When Patty picked up her bracelet she immediately saw the issue. The salesperson at the jewelry store tried to help Patty put on her bracelet and then spent about five minutes trying to get it off. So, Patty asked them to redo it. The jewelry store agreed to redo her bracelet correctly but they said they would have to charge her again! What?! Patty just took the bracelet and left…
Now, I understand that this sounds like one big blog infomercial and it just might be. But, Patty showed me something very important. There is value in the service we provide. There is value in our knowledge of how to knot high quality pearl necklaces and bracelets. And there is certainly a lot of value in our ability to actually work with our customers to give them what they want!
